Issy - Junior Estimator

"I have learnt never to assume what may come next in an industry that is always changing, and to not doubt myself."

This international women’s day, we sat down with one of the fantastic ladies leading the way at Hi-Tech Property Services. Issy’s career has progressed massively since she’s been working here, and the only way is up! Here’s what she had to say about the great work she does for us;

How long have you worked in the industry?

I have worked in the industry for 2 and a half years, and as a Junior Estimator for just under 1 year.

How have you progressed your career working at Hi-Tech?

I began as a Mechanical and Electrical Coordinator and this was my role for roughly 18 months. The head of Facilities Maintenance discussed many options with me and eventually offered the opportunity to become an estimator.

What are your daily responsibilities and how do they differ from your previous role?

In my original role, the focus was around scheduling and managing/planning our reactive works, and ensuring the engineers were available and prepared for upcoming projects, as well as customer support. My current role still involves elements of my previous role, like scheduling and planning, however the focus is on costing and quoting future or follow-on reactive works. I explore procurement options and discuss realistic timeframes with the engineers and managers. I also go out and survey sites. This is not only an interesting new experience but also crucial to the learning and development in my role!

What do you enjoy about working at Hi-Tech?

I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by highly skilled engineers and supportive team members who are quick to help if needed. Some of the relationships I’ve formed here now stretch beyond work, which I am immensely grateful for. I enjoy the freedom I have to shape my own schedule and the variety each day brings.

Is there one job you’re particularly proud of?

I am incredibly proud of my first larger project. We were given the opportunity to upgrade the lighting across Hayling Island Library. I was responsible for the pricing and followed the project from start to finish. I also assisted with procurement and scheduling, and part of the problem solving and final accounting elements. I produced follow-on documentation and attended all customer meetings. Though this project came with its inevitable challenges, the outcome was incredibly positive, and I was very grateful for the support and hard work put in by everyone involved. This stands out to me as a huge learning experience and taste of what my future will look like as I progress in this field.

What is something you have learned while working here?

I have learnt never to assume what may come next in an industry that is always changing, and to not doubt myself. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given, and I am proud I am able to represent women, who are able to achieve so much in fields they may have struggled to access to in the past.
