Renovations at The Port Mahon, Oxford

Years of wear and tear had driven this pub to ruin. We stepped in to give it a new lease of life with a full renovation!

Years of wear and tear had driven this pub to ruin. We stepped in to give it a new lease of life with a full renovation!

Deep in the thralls of the City of Oxford is a charming, grade II listed pub called the Port Mahon. This pub was previously a busy hub for music lovers and budding musicians, with a stage area in the upper floor and two large bar areas downstairs. After falling under new ownership with one of our clients, we were called in to give the place a huge refresh. Watch the process here;

The Hard Work Begins

The commercial kitchen indoors was no longer fit for service. With years of wear and tear and outdated equipment, it was in desperate need of a professional overhaul. The famed venue upstairs and most of the living arrangements inside the pub were outdated and felt dark and closed in. Worst of all was the decking outside, which had fallen to ruin. There were patches of rotten wood caving in, structural damage caused by lit cigarette butts falling between the cracks, and copious amounts of water damage.

Our team got to work giving this pub the refurbishment it deserved!

We ripped up every bit of rotting wood in the back garden, along with the seating and the pergola. That’s when we found that the damage was worse than we had thought, and that unfortunately most of the wood was unsalvageable. When we do projects like this, we like to make sure we keep as much of the materials as we can, to ensure we’re being sustainable in our practices. However, in this case, the condition was too dire to keep almost any of it.

Brand New and Squeaky Clean

Once everything was cleared, we flattened everything, then began digging to place the support beams for the new decking. Once all of them were concreted in place, we built up the decking, until the pub had a brand new deck to boast! We made sure the outdoor seating was back in place, installed new heaters to combat the British weather, and put the pergola back up.

In the mean time, we worked on the interior. Our decorators were hard at work, giving the upstairs rooms a lick of paint and new fittings. Some of the steps needed to be replaced to keep them safe and secure, and a large chunk of the wall was damaged and needed patching up.

With that, the renovation of the Port Mahon was complete. The pub is now back in business and doing better than ever. The bustling Oxford scene has returned to their favourite pub and we know everyone is excited to make good use of the brand new decking.
