Statutory Compliance Contract

Too many cooks spoil the broth, or in this case, too many subcontractors!

Too many cooks spoil the broth, or in this case, too many subcontractors!

A large UK Pub Group approached us a few years back with a robust challenge. They were operating with well over 100 different properties and were the first to admit that as they grew, they lost control over compliance and had no idea how compliant their estate was.

Where to start...

The top-level challenge was a fairly simple one. Our client wanted to know in simple terms how compliant their estate was, what it would cost to get it there, and when it would happen.

While simple, the previous compliance work was inconsistent across the estate because works had been delivered and managed by an agent and a network of subcontractors with varying quality. This meant that we definitely had our work cut out for us!

We started with a consultation period, to understand their business in more detail. A full gap analysis was conducted to ensure regulatory requirements would be fulfilled by the proposed tasks and schedules.

Taking Back Control

Once we had a better understanding of the challenges, we reviewed our various servicing specifications and developed a mobilisation plan unique to the customer. Part of this process revealed a baseline scoring of around 35% of tests being in date and an estate with an overall compliance of around 29% for life threatening tasks.

Hi-Tech put in the time and, about a year on from the start of the contract, the picture they have of their estate is now night and day! They now have a full, comprehensive view of compliance that gives them the ability to target their budgets where it’s needed most, and still maintain the confidence that they’re fulfilling their statutory requirements. Most importantly though, they’re now able to operate while keeping everyone safe.

The moral of this case study is not that we think subcontractors and agencies are a bad thing. In fact, we have a list of subcontractors that we call in when we know the job is safe in their hands. The moral is that without a company like Hi-Tech on your side to give you peace of mind and full control over your compliance, it’s far too easy for cracks to form, and even easier for compliance to slip through the cracks.
