How Hi-Tech Went Undercover to Save a Wedding Venue

What do you do when your electricity is tripping in seemingly random areas of your property two days before that same property is supposed to be the venue for someone’s wedding?

Our customers at The White Horse, a lovely pub, inn, and wedding venue in Chichester, found themselves in that very position. Two days before a big wedding, they called us for help in a crisis! We went out to investigate and found signs of electrical surging, affecting the L2 phase only. Further inspection of the site revealed electrical arcing happening within the main MCCB panel for the site. On our recommendation, the site was then switched off for safety reasons and for further evaluation. We returned the following day as the callout was too late for us to continue sensibly into the night.

Investigating the Fault

Our electricians returned to site at 7am and started investigations into the cause of the electrical arcing. It was suspected to be a loose terminal. However, this could not be verified due to the heat of the incident causing metal components to melt and weld together. Due to the damage caused by the heat, it was assessed that a new MCCB panel was needed.

Measurements were taken of the available space and details recorded so that it could be passed onto the wholesalers. The parts were ordered and whilst we were waiting, we stripped the old unit out and started to prepare for the installation. The parts arrived at 14:30, so we started to install the new unit. However, at 15:00, it was noted that the incoming cable was not sufficient for the terminals in the main switch.

The Race is On

A call was made to see if we could get parts, and the only place selling it anywhere near Chichester was in Bristol – 2 and a half hours away! The quickest and most efficient way to get the parts to site was to contact an operative of ours who is stationed near Bristol. So began a relay. That staff member was able to get the parts to another staff member, who was then able to ferry the parts to the wedding venue. It arrived at 2030.

By that point, we had also realised we would need tools that nobody on site had in their possession. We had to enlist the help of one of our manager’s private toolkit. He then transported himself and the crimper needed to site to help get the job done quicker.

With everything on site and having all the right personnel in the right locations, we were able to get the installation back up and running at 10pm. We then tested the site and were finished at 00:30, ready for the wedding that went ahead smoothly that very morning. In time sensitive emergencies, we do everything we can to rescue our customers.
