Meet Albie.
Trainee Estimator.
Albie is developing his career in Hi-Tech’s estimating team, combining office-based quotation work with site surveys, customer communication and practical assessment of commercial properties.
“I enjoy the versatility. Some days I am in the office quoting work, and others I am on the road carrying out site surveys.”
Developing practical and commercial understanding
As a Trainee Estimator and Surveyor, Albie supports the assessment and pricing of work across Hi-Tech’s customer portfolio.
Much of his time is spent reviewing requirements, organising quotations and helping determine the likely labour, materials and resources needed to complete each job.
The role is not restricted to a desk. Albie also visits sites to inspect proposed works, understand the operational environment and gather the information needed to prepare a more accurate and practical quotation.
Understanding the problem before pricing the solution
Albie’s role combines three connected areas: understanding what the customer needs, assessing how the work can be delivered and translating that information into a clear quotation.
Understanding the Request
Albie reviews job information, photographs, notes and customer requirements to establish what needs to be investigated and which details are still missing.
Surveying the Site
Where necessary, he visits the property to inspect the work, consider access and constraints and develop a clearer understanding of the proposed solution.
Preparing the Quote
Albie helps assemble the labour, material and commercial information required to produce a quotation that is accurate, understandable and deliverable.
“I am never bored. There is always something to do, and the role gives me the chance to keep learning through real work.”
Different jobs, properties and conversations
Albie’s day may begin with organising quotations for different customers, reviewing job details and speaking with contractors or colleagues to clarify what is required.
Other days involve travelling to a customer property, meeting site contacts and assessing the proposed work first-hand.
That variation gives him exposure to different trades, commercial environments and types of property, while helping him understand why accurate information at the estimating stage is so important.
- Reviewing new and existing quotation requests
- Liaising with contractors, suppliers and internal teams
- Visiting customer sites to inspect proposed works
- Clarifying scope, access and operational requirements
- Helping keep customers updated throughout the process
Building confidence through responsibility
The role is helping Albie develop the communication, organisation and commercial skills needed to become a capable estimator.
Communication
Regular contact with contractors, customers and colleagues has helped Albie become more confident in professional conversations and asking detailed questions.
Organisation
Managing information across multiple quotation requests requires clear priorities, accurate records and careful follow-up.
Commercial Awareness
Albie is learning that the right quotation must balance customer expectations, practical delivery, cost, risk and the information available.
Learning how the pieces fit together
Estimating is much more than applying a price to a short description. Each quotation depends on the quality of the information gathered before it is issued.
Albie is learning how technical details, access, materials, labour, customer expectations and commercial risk all influence the final proposal.
That understanding helps reduce uncertainty for the customer and gives the delivery team a clearer starting point if the work is approved.
Gather the information
Review the customer request, job history, photographs and available technical details.
Clarify the requirement
Speak with the customer, contractors or internal teams to resolve gaps and assumptions.
Assess the property
Survey the site where photographs and written information are not enough.
Develop the quotation
Bring the scope, resources, costs and delivery considerations into one clear proposal.
A team invested in his development
Albie describes Hi-Tech as a welcoming environment where colleagues take an active interest in helping him progress.
Being part of an experienced estimating and operational team gives him people to ask, learn from and work alongside as his responsibilities increase.
“Everyone is here to help me progress further and cares about my development as a trainee estimator.”
