Meet James.
Property Services Supervisor.
From starting out as a labourer to running his own property-maintenance business and supervising Hi-Tech’s Property Services Technicians, James has built his career through practical experience, initiative and a determination to keep learning.
“I enjoy being trusted to make decisions, use my initiative and complete work to a high standard.”
Starting at the beginning and building skills through experience
James entered the construction industry after returning from travelling and looking for his next opportunity. He started as a labourer, learning the realities of working on site and supporting experienced tradespeople.
His attitude and interest in the work were recognised, and the company he worked for supported him with training courses that allowed him to develop a trade and broaden his practical skills.
Rather than standing still, James continued to build on that foundation. In 2011, he became self-employed and successfully operated his own property-maintenance business for a number of years.
From learning on site to leading service delivery
Each stage of James’s career has added another layer of technical knowledge, commercial awareness and responsibility.
Labourer
James started by supporting trades on site, learning how construction work is planned, completed safely and delivered to the required standard.
Self-Employed
Running his own property-maintenance business developed James’s ability to diagnose problems, manage customers, organise work and take full responsibility for results.
Supervisor
James now combines hands-on experience with team leadership, helping Property Services Technicians deliver consistent, high-quality work across customer sites.
“The best part of the role is being able to make decisions, use my initiative and leave each site knowing the work has been completed properly.”
Taking a complete view of each property
Property Services Technicians visit allocated customer sites regularly, dealing with the smaller repairs, defects and wear-and-tear issues that can quickly build up in a busy commercial property.
Rather than treating every minor issue as a separate reactive callout, the service allows multiple tasks to be inspected, prioritised and completed during a planned visit.
James uses his broad maintenance experience to assess each issue, decide on the most practical solution and ensure the property is left safe, presentable and ready for customers.
- Completing a broad range of minor building and maintenance tasks
- Prioritising work around the needs of a trading property
- Identifying issues before they become larger or more disruptive
- Building trusted relationships with site managers and their teams
Trust, variety and visible results
The role suits people who enjoy practical problem-solving and are confident taking ownership without losing sight of the customer experience.
Freedom to decide
James is trusted to assess what he finds on site and use his own knowledge to determine the most effective way to complete the work.
Every day is different
The variety of sites, repairs and customer environments means the role continually tests and expands a technician’s practical skills.
Immediate impact
The benefit of the work is visible. Defects are resolved, standards improve and site teams can see that their concerns have been dealt with.
Helping others deliver work the right way
James’s progression into supervision allows him to share the knowledge gained throughout his career with the wider Property Services team.
Because he understands the realities of working alone across customer sites, he can provide practical guidance when technicians encounter unusual defects, competing priorities or work that needs additional support.
His focus is not simply on getting jobs closed. It is on ensuring the solution is appropriate, the finish is professional and the site team is confident that the issue has been properly resolved.
Experience matters—but so does continuing to learn
James values the opportunity to continue expanding his skills through additional training. In a broad property-maintenance role, every new capability helps technicians diagnose more problems, complete more work and provide a better service to customers.
“I like having the opportunity to expand my skills through further training and continue progressing.”
